CLEAN OFF YOUR DESK

by ibrahimmorsy

A slovenly desk may be more than just an eyesore — it could lead to poor productivity.  A desk stacked with paper causes stress as people are constantly reminded of unfinished work, which leads to low productivity. Desk stress includes silent interruptions that infiltrate the work place. These interruptions are disguised as files, numerous telephone messages, and reminders written on tiny scraps of paper — all strewn on the desk.

The result, is a trail of unfinished tasks, unanswered letters, unwritten reports, unreturned phone calls, and unread memos and publications. All of these hunt an employee’s mind.

To help get this clutter out of your life, consider the following tips to keep your desk clear:

  •  Keep all activities recorded in one calendar system rather than using several calendars.
  • Open files on your desk can distract you from the task at hand. Keep files closed, organized, and out of immediate view.
  • Telephone messages and reminders strewn on your desk or written on scraps of paper easily lost. Use a “to do” list instead.
  • Alphabetize your business cards and file them in one place for easy reference.
  • Files that you will someday need back, file them in a drawer.
  • File reading matters – newspaper, magazines, and catalogues – in one place and specify a time to read them.
  • Review your in-box twice a day and throw out, delegate, file, or act upon the contents immediately. Keep the box out of your sight and off your desk.
  • Keep reference books organized and out of your line vision.
  • Keep pens, staplers, and tape dispensers in a drawer for easy access but out of distracting view.
